Taliban ban Afghan women from traveling unaccompanied

Taliban leaders in Afghanistan have restricted women’s freedom to travel around the country without male accompaniment, Interfax-Religion reports.
The Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice ruled that drivers are prohibited from transporting unaccompanied women for distances exceeding 72 kilometers. Drivers are also forbidden from playing music while women are in the vehicle.
The ministry further stated that all female passengers must have their faces covered, although it did not specify what type of covering is required.
Afghanistan’s government said the restrictions on women were being introduced temporarily to ensure their safety while working and studying.
As the UOJ previously reported, the Taliban altered women’s rights by a special decree.
