Metropolitan Dimitrios of Gjirokastër has reposed in the Lord

The Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church announces with deep sorrow the repose of Metropolitan Dimitrios of Gjirokastër, who fell asleep in the Lord on June 28, 2025, at 20:30 in the University Hospital of Ioannina (Greece).
Metropolitan Dimitrios had been receiving treatment for a respiratory infection and endocarditis. Despite doctors’ efforts, his condition worsened, and he passed away due to multiple organ failure.
Metropolitan Dimitrios joined the missionary work of the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church from the very beginning of its revival, after the arrival of Archbishop Anastasios in August 1991. From 1994 he served as protosyncellus of the Metropolis of Gjirokastër.
In 2006, the Holy Synod of the Albanian Orthodox Church elected him Metropolitan of Gjirokastër.
The funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of the Resurrection in Gjirokastër on July 1, 2025.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the new Albanian Archbishop commented on his position regarding the OCU.
