Sensors to be installed on St. Sophia's to monitor vibrations from shelling

Seismic sensors are planned to be installed on the building of St Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv to monitor vibrational loads, primarily from blast waves during Russian shelling of the capital. This was reported by the press service of the National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv".
On August 7, 2025, officials met with representatives of UNESCO in Ukraine and discussed the technical aspects and prospects of installing such sensors.
"Thanks to this equipment, specialists of Sophia of Kyiv will be able to receive operational information about external impacts on the 11th-century building, assess potential threats, and develop risk scenarios to ensure preparedness for emergencies," the reserve stated.
According to them, this will also allow documenting and providing objective information to international professional institutions, particularly UNESCO, ICOMOS, and ICCROM, for the preservation of the world heritage monument.
