Synod of Patriarchate of Alexandria elects six new bishops

On October 7, 2025, a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church was held in Alexandria under the presidency of Patriarch Theodore II, reports Orthodox Times.
During the meeting, the Synod made a number of decisions aimed at strengthening church governance in Africa. Several dioceses, including Eldoret and Northern Kenya, Arusha and Central Tanzania, as well as Malawi, were elevated to the rank of metropolises. Metropolitan Makarios of Nairobi received the title of Archbishop of Kenya and Exarch of all Eastern Africa.
In addition, the Synod decided to create new dioceses in Madagascar and Uganda by dividing the existing metropolises of Antananarivo and Kampala. A Patriarchal vicar was appointed to coordinate church activities on the island of Mauritius.
The Holy Synod also approved the election of six new bishops for various regions of Africa, including Rwanda, Kenya, Botswana, and Madagascar, entrusting them with the development of pastoral service and missionary activities on the ground.
Earlier, the UO that the Patriarch of Alexandria called for peace and hostilities cessation in Africa.
