Vatican on peace plan for Ukraine: Both sides will have to compromise

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has commented on the 28-point peace plan for ending the war in Ukraine proposed by the White House. His conversation with journalists took place on the evening of November 20 after he celebrated Mass in memory of the victims of the Holodomor at the Roman church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, vaticannews.va reported.

“It will be very difficult to find a compromise between the needs on one side and the demands on the other,” Parolin stated. “So I imagine that the path to negotiation will be an uphill battle.”

At the same time, he expressed hope that “channels of dialogue will open up that will allow this tragedy to end.”

Regarding possible territorial concessions, Parolin said that “it is premature" to talk about it, also because such matters "will be the result of negotiations.”

“Peace,” he said, “will only be achieved if both sides are somewhat satisfied with the compromise, because in the end a compromise will have to be made.”

As the UOJ reported, the Vatican has spoken out against banning the UOC.
