Pope Leo XIV has received an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump to take part in his new initiative – the Peace Council – intended to help resolve the conflict in Gaza and other regions. As Orthodoxtimes reports, the pontiff will consider the invitation.
According to Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, “the Pope has received an invitation and we are thinking about what to do.” He believes that “this is something that requires careful reflection before giving an answer.”
The cardinal said the decision requires prudence due to the sensitivity of the matter and the fact that the pope previously criticized certain policies of the Trump administration.
The Peace Council was initially conceived as a platform to end hostilities in Gaza, but it later received a broader mandate – to promote the cessation of international conflicts.
Among those invited, according to diplomatic sources, are also Israel and Egypt. However, some participants expressed concerns that the initiative could complicate the work of the United Nations.
As the UOJ previously reported, Trump invited Pope Leo XIV to the "Board of Peace."
