Ukraine asks Japan for funds to restore Lavra

On July 1, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held talks in Tokyo with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, during which the two sides discussed, among other issues, support for restoring the damaged Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra through UNESCO, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry reports.
During the meeting, Sybiha briefed his Japanese counterpart on the situation on the battlefield, Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian territory, and the prospects for peace efforts. He also separately spoke about the consequences of the Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
After this, Motegi expressed Japan’s intention to provide support through UNESCO for the restoration of the damaged Lavra. The Ukrainian minister also said Kyiv was ready to develop cooperation with Tokyo, primarily in the field of drone technologies.
Following the talks, Ukraine and Japan signed an agreement on a scholarship project worth about $500,000 under Japan’s JDS grant aid program. The project is aimed at training specialists for public administration, reforms, and Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
Earlier, the UOJ reported that Greece’s Culture Ministry will finance the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
