Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the situation of religious organizations in Ukraine with Vatican Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. The Ukrainian president thanked the Holy See representative for supporting Ukrainian clergy and assisting the country on its path toward EU membership.
During the talks, the parties discussed the role of clergy who minister to military personnel and civilians amid the war. Zelensky stressed that the Holy See recognizes Ukraine’s fulfillment of all the requirements for joining the European Union.
The president noted that the delegation’s visit coincided with a massive attack on Kyiv and expressed gratitude to the Vatican for its readiness to organize a meeting of world leaders aimed at achieving peace.
Zelensky also recalled the recent visit of Cardinal Matteo Zuppi and confirmed that Ukraine is awaiting a visit by Pope Leo XIV.
Archbishop Gallagher conveyed greetings from the pontiff, who is currently on vacation but is closely following developments in Ukraine. Gallagher said it was important, in a sense, for the delegation to witness firsthand the dangers and suffering endured by the Ukrainian people.
As the UOJ reported, Zelensky awarded OCU “Metropolitan” Mykhail Zinkevych the Order of Merit.
