The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination against Christians in Europe (OIDAC Europe) has published its monthly report on hate crimes against Christians, mentioning the murder of a monk of the Holy Dormition Sviatohirsk Lavra as a result of an armed attack.

OIDAC Europe drew attention to the strong public concern over the incident. "The murder of a monk at the Sviatohirsk Monastery must be viewed against the backdrop of the general tension around the Ukrainian Orthodox Church," the human rights organization stated. "Although the motives of the attack remain under investigation, critics are urging law enforcement to conduct a thorough inquiry and are expressing concern in the context of the ongoing political and legal pressure on the UOC."

In total, for August 2026, the OIDAC monitoring group recorded 48 anti-Christian hate crimes in European countries, which became the highest monthly figure for the entire current year. "The death of a monk and serious injury of two other members of the monastic community demonstrate that the recorded incidents are not limited to attacks on property alone," the human rights defenders concluded.

OIDAC Europe is an international non-governmental organization headquartered in Vienna, which has been systematically monitoring violations of religious freedom of Christians in Europe since 2010. The Sviatohirsk Monastery has come to the organization's attention before. Earlier, in its January report, the human rights defenders mentioned an attack on the monastery that resulted in acts of vandalism, desecration, and theft.

As the UOJ reported, Germany called for an investigation into the murder of a monk at the Sviatohirsk Lavra.
